When Alex Rodriquez hits his 600th home run sometime soon he will be only the 7th player to reach that milestone. Out of the six players now with 600 only four are considered legit, Aaron, Ruth, Mays, Griffey. The other two on the list are Barry Bonds the all-time leader in home runs and Sammy Sosa both are considered flawed because of steroids even though no one has actually proved they used. But what about Aaron and Mays they played in the era of amphetimines (greenies) which were definite performance enhancers even though we don't know if they ever took them. A-Rod has admitted to steroid use but he has not faced the same stigma as Bonds, Sosa, and others, somehow it seems A-Rod will be celebrated while others will be looked upon with contempt, is it because he plays in NY? We know steroids enhance performance simply because no one is hitting 60, 70, home runs anymore. All we can do to judge players from different eras is to see how they did in their own time, saying that some of these players like Bonds and Sosa played in the steroid era where I am quite sure there were just as many pitchers on steroids as hitters which means the pitching was enhanced just like the hitting. There are other factors involved here case in point Mark McGuire who took Andro which was a legal supplement when he played, yet McGuire is treated like a pariah except in St. Louis, then we have McGuire and Sosa pretty much bringing baseball back after the 94' strike. There cannot be a double standard when it comes to these players, either honor them all or honor none of them, and you cannot keep overlooking the players of the 50's,60's,70's who took amphetamines as performance enhancers, they weren't angels either. When A-Rod hits his 600th home run next week he will be honored, then maybe its time to start thinking of the other guys out there.
